Rather than focusing only on family like China and Korea, Japan tend to focus more on personal appearances. In other words, they focus more on not being self centered and selfish. So, in Japanese culture, a lot of emphasis is paid on treating guests well, and remembering when someone does something nice for you. You see lots of gift giving, and then return gifts or at least thank-you cards. Every new year, there is almost 2 trillion thank-you cards that goes in and out of Korea to Japan. When you visit someone’s house you bring a gift always and you don’t over indulge.

After all, Japanese doesn’t want to be seen as a burden to the host. Also, when you’re competing with another person in a game. Confucius emphasized acting with good sportsmanship, and being a gentleman regardless of whether you win or lose.
